Household Insurance

There are many types of household insurance policies and they can be arranged to your specific requirement. There is Buildings Insurance and Contents Insurance and this can be arranged as either a single policy or a combined policy. A contents policy can be extended to cover an All Risks section to cover items whilst away from the home eg Personal Effects, Jewellery, Money, Credit Cards and Pedal Cycles etc. Policies can also be extended to include cover for Frozen Food and Legal Expenses. If you select a combined policy a discount is given.

Buildings Insurance

This covers the actual structure of your home, including any permanent fixtures. So it covers what most people would associate with ‘the building’ eg the walls, roof , floors, ceilings etc. But it also covers any fixed glass, sanitary fittings, fitted kitchens and fitted bedrooms.

Many home owners assume they will be automatically covered for any damage but that is not the case. For example any damage caused by wear, tear and deterioration and lack of maintenance is excluded.

There are two levels of cover available ie Standard or with Accidental Damage and the premium is higher if you select Accidental Damage. A Standard policy would cover all the main insurance perils ie fire, lightning, aircraft, explosion, riot, malicious damage, storm, flood, burst pipe, impact, theft and subsidence. The cover for flood damage and subsidence may be subject to special terms depending on your postal code. A Standard policy also includes cover for accidental damage to fixed glass and sanitary fittings. For an additional premium Accidental damage cover can be included and this covers accidental loss or damage eg you dropped an item on a ceramic hob and broke it.

The basis of settlement on this type of policy is rebuilding cost and when calculating the sum insured you should deduct the value of the land and add the cost for debris removal and professional fees.

As a home owner you really need to know beyond any doubt exactly what you will and won’t be covered for. How many times do we read about homeowners who have found to their cost that the insurance they have paid for is inadequate?

Contents Insurance

Contents Insurance covers those items in your home you would take with you if you moved eg furniture, carpets, curtains, tools etc. Cover is also provided for contents in outbuildings subject to policy limits.

There are two levels of cover available ie Standard or with Accidental damage and the premium is higher if you select accidental damage. A Standard policy would cover all the main insurance perils ie fire, lightning, aircraft, explosion, riot, malicious damage, storm, floods, burst pipes, impact, theft and subsidence. A Standard policy also covers for accidental damage to televisions and stereos. For  an additional premium Accidental damage cover can be included and this covers accidental loss or damage eg you spill red wine on your carpet.

The basis for settlement on this policy is a Reinstatement basis or commonly known as New for Old. The sum insured should represent the cost of replacing items as new. The basic sum insured normally starts at £30000 and lower and higher sums as required. There are limits within the policy for high risk items and valuables and if you have items the limit then they need to be specified.

All Risks Cover – a contents policy can be extended to cover items taken out of the house for accidental loss or damage eg jewellery, sports equipment, personal effects, money, credit cards and pedal cycles. Additional premiums are charged and the policies normally cover the items overseas.

Other Covers – The policy can also be extended to cover for Loss of Frozen Food and Legal Expenses for suitable additional premiums

Specialist Flood Insurance or Subsidence Insurance may be required depending on where you live.

Specialist Home Insurance – there are many risks which are not suitable for the standard household markets. It could be that the property is of non-standard construction, thatched, a Listed Building, not owner-occupied or a holiday home/chalet. We have access to specialised insurers and can provide quotations for property in the UK and overseas.

All risks are rated on such things as postcode, type and age of property, age of proposer, claims experience, security to name but a few. All policies carry compulsory excesses and these will be advised to you at the point of quotation together with any other special clauses or warranties that will apply.
